Glycolic acid

What is glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is a molecule primarily derived from sugar cane and one of the best-known alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). AHAs are acidic molecules that, through various mechanisms of action, increase the rate of cell renewal and help remove dead cells from the surface of the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of the skin).

Properties and benefits of glycolic acid

Glycolic acid is a small, water-soluble molecule that easily penetrates the skin and has a powerful exfoliating effect. The higher the concentration, the more intense the exfoliation. It improves skin firmness and smoothness, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and evening out skin tone. If you've never used it before, start with a low concentration of glycolic acid, and once your skin is used to it, you can use a higher concentration. This will minimize the potential for irritation from this exfoliating ingredient.
